Darren Laver Joins TSSA Staff as Technical Consultant to serve Recreational Clubs and Inner City Soccer Outreach
The Tennessee State Soccer Association announced the hiring of Darren Laver to oversee two new, critical areas of development to advance soccer across the state. “Adding Darren to our staff is another integral piece to help us live out our vision of pioneering programming in Tennessee,” said TSSA Executive Director Hans Hobson. “Darren will provide valuable leadership to recreational clubs and coaches with our ability to offer a virtual director of coaching to our member clubs. The resources and tools Darren will offer are cutting edge and something no other state association currently has to offer.” In addition to being a recreational club liaison, Laver will also oversee the IMPACT program and Streets2theStadium projects offered by TSSA and Nashville SC. Both programs will serve as outreach to inner city and underserved communities allowing access to the sport for kids who otherwise may never have a chance to be exposed to the game. “Growing up in England gives Darren a unique perspective that soccer can be accessed by everyone regardless of socio-economic background,” added Hobson. “The game is part of the daily culture in many parts of the world and we hope to bring that same feel to Tennessee.”
Laver has an extensive background in the game as a player, coach educator, and as an elite street soccer player. Born in Yeovil, Somerset, England he played with Sherborne Town FC, Yeovil Town FC, Southampton FC, Dorset County, England School Boys. His successful playing career included signing with Southampton at age 16. Faced with an injury that cut his professional career short, Laver took to the next phase of becoming an educator and street soccer performer. He was so deft on the street soccer scene that this passion led him to becoming voted one of the best street soccer players in the United Kingdom and was the selected to be one of 25 star players to be featured in EA Sports FIFA Street video game.
Laver also served as the director and founder of The International Street Soccer Association (ISSA) and the Virtual Director of Coaching (The VDOC), the soccer club consultancy organization he will be bringing to TSSA recreational clubs. “I have dedicated my life to coaching players to improve their playing ability in a fun and creative environment,” Laver said. “I could not be more excited to join the TSSA staff and help develop the game from grassroots levels, the streets, and simply giving my passion for soccer back to the kids and coaches in Tennessee.” Laver will provide training programs, expert advice, and coach education. He is also a respected author in the field of soccer coaching and youth development, providing articles in the United Soccer Coaches Soccer Journal and in 2010 publishing ‘Street Soccer: The Coaches' Guide: Coaching People, Creating Players’ by German publishing company Meyer & Meyer Sport (September 26, 2016)
Laver holds certifications in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), SAQ (Speed, Agility, Quickness) Advanced Trainer, Alexander Technique - Movement Specialist, Licensed English FA and Futsal Coach and a member of the Professional Football Scouts Association.
