Why am I now a Grassroots (or Regional) referee?

U.S. Soccer has done away with the number grading system and implemented a new, 5-tier system.

  • If you were a grade 7, 8, or 9, you are now a Grassroots referee.

  • If you were a 5 or 6, you are now a Regional referee.

  • If you were a grade 3 or 4, you are now a National referee/assistant referee.

  • If you are a FIFA or a PRO referee, you do not need these FAQs. Keep up the good work.

I was a grade 5/6 (now a Regional referee), but I want to recertify for 2020. What should I do?

  • Check out this U.S. Soccer Memo

  • Then, you should have attended the Advanced Clinic in Memphis August 3-4, 2019. If you weren’t able to, you must contact Jeremy Knudsen, State Director of Instruction, to attend a clinic.

  • Next, you must create a profile at U.S. Soccer Referee Learning Center (LC) and complete a background check (if 18+).

    • You MUST complete a background check prior to registering for any courses.

  • Sign up for the appropriate recertification course (Regional Referee RECERT)

    • You will have to complete ALL assignments under the “Assignments” tab, including SafeSport training.

      • Access Code: YC3E-6P5G-YYIL-CS2M

  • You may then schedule your assessments with Susan Williamson, State Director of Assessments.

Yes, you need to pass the Regional Referee Fitness test. Checking with your DRA to see when other fitness tests will be scheduled (if you didn’t pass the fitness test at the Advanced Clinic in August). You may be exempt if you took a PRO Fitness test this year but will need to check with Don Eubank to verify.

  • Register for the 2020 Grassroots RECERT course in the LC and complete ALL assignments, including SafeSport.

  • New Grassroots referees MUST attend a Field Training Session (FTS) to become a referee.

  • After you complete all these steps, you will be recertified for 2020.
